Oh .. Its a running WOD...
Now,I know the above went through your head because you saw "Hero" and only running listed. If you're a great runner it was more of a positive tone.. But If your not a great runner, you should be here. If you cant run due to injury? you should be here. I haven't Run in 20 years and I love this workout. There are so many ways to achieve the desired stimulus with out doing the exact workout. I teach this concept around the world to coaches and athletes in CF boxes. We are actually teaching this course along with a few of my american coaches at Indestri on Saturday. ( still a few open spots to enroll if you want to be a better athlete or coach.. this is the course to take.)But back to the topic of dodging workouts ( because be honest, if you aren't coming and its not a rest day, you are dodging it :)We avoid workouts because you either do not enjoy it or you find the movements to be too challenging... We have some of the best coaches I have ever had the pleasure to meet and work with. Our coaches are Highly educated, certified and experienced. If you explain your injury or fear they will find a solution that still keeps you included and achieves the desired stimulus ( I promise)
But if you don't wanna run because it is hard???
Well then this is the time to run! This is the time to regroup, take on the challenge and overcome the obstacle. If you look at the options (levels) below, we can always scale distances and progress over time. If you don't start you will never get there. Take advantage of your abilities, embrace the feeling of uncomfortable and at the end of the day feel like you did something great. Celebrate a 200m run if that's the farthest you have gone. Shit, call me I come celebrate it with you. :)
If we spend our life avoiding things that are hard what will we accomplish?
I know it sounds cliche but its the truth.
I'll let you in on a personal experience, I used to dread swimming after being paralyzed, I cant kick my legs, I could easily drown, I'm not light (6'4 200lbs), I don't float, ect ect ... But in reality it was just because it was hard AF. I spent the first 2 years after needing a wheelchair always coming up with an excuse to stay out of the water. But then one day I was teaching a kids camp at University of Illinois and this little guy with no legs and missing 1 arm about 7 years old says "Coach I wanna go swimming with the other kids at lunch will you come in the water with me?" Right then I looked at myself and said I'm avoiding the water because I have 2 limbs impaired and this guy is down to 1 limb and his only request was my company in the water. So I was straight up with him and said, "dude I really don't want to swim but if you go in i'll go in and maybe you can show me some tips." I realized in that moment when we hit the water that this was just a mental block, not a physical barrier, I had all the abilities and physical capacity to swim a little bit, I just had to start. So I did and I swam a bit stayed close to the side and from then on each time I had the chance to swim I did. I approached it like everything we do in the gym. I practiced the skill, I "scaled" the distances and I got better.I now own a pool, I open water swim in all climates, I surfed in Santa Cruz with 12 foot waves and am more comfortable in the water than from before I got injured.Truth, Swimming long distances sucks! its hard and not fun and in big waves I still have those fears from before but I acknowledge that, accept it and then over come that shit. Because we are only as strong as we are willing to be, you stepped through the doors at Indestri with many fears, but slowly we see you conquer those, we see you get better at general movement, we see you get stronger. So trust us, we will work with you and you will surprise yourself. So when you see these kind of WODs where you think, I'll go tomorrow because I don't like this, or its hard and I am no good at it. Somewhere someone with less ability is doing it. Take a deep breath, let your coach know how you feel and we will together as a team/community and overcome! Thanks for being part of our lives, trusting us to help you and reading my ramblingsStouty
