Day of Pink - Wednesday, April 10th, 2019
Day of Pink
This Wednesday we wear pink! In fact the nation will wear pink, as a symbol of anti-bullying against those who are bullied for being Gay, Lesbian & Transgender .
April 10, 2019 marks the International Day of Pink. It is a day where communities across the country, and across the world, can unite in celebrating diversity and raising awareness to stop homophobia, transphobia, transmisogyny, and all forms of bullying.
The Day of Pink was started in Nova Scotia in 2007 when two Grade 12 students saw a Grade 9 student who wearing a pink shirt being bullied on the first day of school. Bullies harassed the boy, called him a homosexual for wearing pink and threatened to beat him up. The two Grade 12 students - David Shepherd and Travis Price bought and distributed 50 pink shirts and encouraged peers to arrive to school wearing pink.
The message was clear: anyone can bully, any can be victimized by bullying, but together we can stop it.
Each year on the second Wednesday of April, millions of people wear pink and take a stand. The Day of Pink is a symbol, a spark, that empowers and inspires people across Canada to create amazing social change!
So if you have pink, please wear it!
I looked everywhere to see if an awareness WOD had been created for Day of Pink but came up empty so I thought about what a WOD like this should feel like. My thoughts kept coming back of how heavy it must feel to think you are different or be afraid to be who you are. The hurt they must feel that comes from those who bully against you because you don't fit their definition of love. It would emotionally and physically wear you down. So although I can not understand fully what that feels like, we can bring awareness to it and support those who are experiencing it and help future generations to be open minded and accepting of all people no matter who they love.
