CrossFit Adaptive Training Specialty Course - Thursday, March 8, 2018

CrossFit Adaptive Training Specialty Course

This summer CFI will host our 2nd CrossFit Specialty Course.  In 2016 we hosted the Strongman Course and this coming July 21st, we will host the CrossFit Adaptive Training Specialty Course.

The CrossFit Specialty Course: Adaptive Training is an interactive single-day course designed to teach trainers and athletes how to make CrossFit accessible to impaired athletes. Participants will learn how to train athletes with a wide range of impairments, from non-permanent (trauma, injury or illness) to permanent (congenital disorders, combat trauma, automobile accidents, etc.).Through lecture and hands-on practical sessions, participants will learn about adaptive training theory and methods, as well as specific strategies for adapting individual movements and entire workouts. Participants will learn how to develop a single-day class plan (including warm-ups, progressions and cool-downs), practice programming multiple training days, and develop a long-term training plan for impaired athletes (from temporarily impaired to permanently adaptive).Attendees will receive access to additional training resources and education, and the seminar staff and adaptive community will provide ongoing support.* This course will focus on physical impairments and their subsequent limitations. Intellectual, developmental, and psychosocial impairments will be discussed but training methods will not be practiced.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The Adaptive Training Course teaches participants how to:
  1. Apply adaptive training principles and methods.
  2. Identify the most common physical impairments and understand the possible impact on training and task accomplishment.
  3. Understand the role the trainer has in a temporarily impaired athlete’s recovery process and a permanently adaptive athlete’s development.
  4. Practice adapting CrossFit movements for the most common impairments and physical limitations.
  5. Program for temporarily impaired and permanently adaptive athletes using CrossFit methodology.
  6. Plan a training session and program multiple days using adaptive training principles, then experience a class as an adaptive athlete (simulated upper-body impairment, lower-body impairment and seated athlete).
  7. Develop class-management strategies to provide an inclusive training environment.
  8. Conduct athlete onboarding and develop a training plan for permanently adaptive athletes. Or, as an adaptive athlete, learn how to develop a plan with a training team.
  9. Onboard or retain athletes who have suffered a temporary impairment (trauma or illness) and keep them training during and after recovery.
