WheelWOD Open & Games - Thursday, March 28th, 2019
Hey as many of you know,
I handle a lot of the adaptive programming for major competitions around the world as well teach on seminar Staff for CrossFit HQ. I also run a program called WheelWOD that started in 2014 to give adaptive athletes a place to compete during the open, which lead to the development of the WheelWOD Games Hosted by UG series ( Scott, Jen & Paul) From there we have grown 6 times the size of the first Open adapted in terms of Athlete involvement. This year i will be running 5 competitions around the world and I have plans to do 8 in 2020.
In this years open we had 28 different countries represented 307 athletes involved including our own CrossFit Indestri athlete Jo Nicholson. Not everyone knows, as she doesn't show it but Jo is an adaptive athlete. Adaptive athletes are not just in wheelchairs or missing limbs, some look just like you but under the skin there is change.
An Adaptive athlete is: An athlete with a permanent impairment that affects their work capacity and functional movement.
That doesn't mean you always qualify to compete in adaptive competition but if you have to adapt movement for life do to an impairment we would classify you as an adaptive athlete. Jo had her full ankle replaced, which stops her from jumping, loading heavy squats, running and quick direction changes.
So when I told her she should compete.. she wasn't sure it fit her. But she by far passes all the requirements to be in adaptive competition. And so she took on the WheelWOD version of the open and absolutely crushed it!! Finished 3rd in a field of 46 and won 3 workouts out right. If it wasn't for those damn strict HSPU she would of won the whole thing. We want to take this minute to congratulate Jo for taking on this challenge and being a great athlete and competitor as well as earning a spot amongst the worlds best athletes at the WheelWOD games and an opportunity to represent Canada if she accepts! Make sure you congratulate her when you see her in the gym! This is an incredible accomplishment!
We also want to congratulate all those who did the Open this year, its not about competing its about community and sharing real struggles and victories. the open comes back in October this year due to the schedule changes in the CrossFit games season... So if you didn't do it this past Open, think about coming out and doing it this season. if you gotta scale more then needed then we will stop recording your official result, scale as needed and keep working out and having fun. we will cheer each other on and share some stories and be excited about what we can do as well as what we will eventually be able to do. Because that is what CrossFit is.. Its a grueling celebration of what we are capable of :)
Last and most important.. I want to Thank Jen & Steph who make the open what it is for all of us and keep me on task and focused. They allow me to do all these extra things in the adaptive world by handling the majority of the load here at home for all of you. They work day in and day out judging, teaching, giving advice, listening to your fears and validating your scores. and somehow still found time to do daily work and paint the gym its new colour. So next time you see them, say thanks, as they deserve it and they do it for you.
Now lets get back to our regular programming and get ready to start running i see clear cement and could care about the temperature :)
