A trip to the games
written by : Deanna PoseyI was asked to write about my experience at the CrossFit Games! Wow, how do I break this into a short story.Well it was dream come true and honestly, it surpassed all my expectations and more. When you first get there for athlete check in you are treated like a professional athlete, everyone is so excited to shake you hand and congratulate you. Why? Because it’s something most Crossfiters could only dream of. You walk into the Reebok fitting area and you’re greeted with a box full of clothes with your name, number and your gym on them. How freaking cool is that. You have an entourage of people while you try on your clothes to do any adjustments so everything fits perfectly. Then you get sized for 4 pairs of shoes. Then you move along to socks, headbands, ROMWOD life time subscription, grips, weight belts, sandbag, sunglasses, then get your pictures taken, and more pictures! After that you get to spend as much time as you want from Monday to Sunday in the warm up area. Which has literally everything you would ever want in a gym and a lot of it. You’re warming up with all the other pro athletes from the Dottir’s to Froning to Toomie. It was so cool!As for the competition it was the most professional competition by far I’ve ever been to. There are a lot of rules and mandatory briefings multiple times a day. Very detailed information on what is expected and allowed on the floor. From regimented checkin times to getting your chip timer at corralling and covering any branding on your equipment. The competing aspect of it, well all I can say is if you thought the open was intense and stressful you have no idea! Times that by 1000! Lol. But as stressful as it was, the moment walking out on the field of the stadium or the competition floor where you watched all the Games athlete on TV and you are not only with them now your one of them. It’s pretty sorrel. Not knowing most of the events, you don’t have a lot time to over think it or strategize. The ones that I actually tried to strategize didn’t go as well as the ones I just did what I would do if I was at the gym. Which was a good learning experience.I definitely struggled a lot mentally from the first event. When you are competing at this level there is no room for error. I got a no rep on a burpee in a sprint, for hitting my head on the bar and it cost me 4 places. Which was 40 points... Literally every second matters. Re watching the videos and seeing my pacing and strategy, did I execute perfectly?... Well, some things were good and others I definitely would’ve done differently. Basically everyone is good at everything there was no pacing, it was go as hard as you can and hopefully you have the capacity to hang on!I learned as the weekend went on after the event you spend a little time discussing it good or bad then you move onto the next one whether you want to or not and that the competition isn’t over till it’s over. I went into day 3 in 5th place with no expectations of making the podium. My coach told me over and over this statement but I had little faith. So I decided Saturday night that we would check out Sunday morning because I didn’t want to stick around for the rest of the day if I wasn’t gonna podium. Well apparently championship Sunday's do exist and there was 300 points to collect. I had a terrible first event but entering into my territory for the last 2. Lock-in in 2 second place finishes and putting me into 3rd place over all. Immediately following the final event we were told our placing and then escorted to drug testing. The awards ceremony was so special to me, standing on the podium with the Canada flag representing my country was such a proud moment. After that we got taken into the coliseum with the individual and team athletes to celebrate and congratulate each other take pictures eat pizza and drink beer! Which was the perfect close to an amazing weekend!
