Life Changes- Friday, May 31st, 2019
Life Changes, We change &
Eventually our reality has to change...
We have all had set backs in training, from injury, mental & physical burnout or life changes, ( getting older, new relationships, new pet, baby, marriage, work, new working conditions or hours ect..)
So there comes a time when we need to admit to ourselves certain aspects of change will affect the amount of energy spent in the gym or sometimes the amount of time for fitness. Two things I have learned over 30 years of competitive sport and training is
- There always has to be time for fitness. Even if that means I wake up at 4am, train alone or on the road. I have to do it because it makes me feel better about myself and it keeps me healthy and able to do all the other things I need to do to survive and make ends meet. Its the first tool in my bag of life and without it all my other responsibilities I have will suffer because I am not physically and mentally prepared for them. It is my base for a better life. SO I NEED TO MAKE TIME!
- We all start somewhere and we all have many phases throughout our fitness journey where we have to wipe the whiteboard clean and begin once again. The numbers that once were, are no longer as high, the finesse in your movement is no longer fluid- and there you stand. Rebuilding a process you fought so hard to get to... Is it worth the climb back up? Can you do it again? Better yet, Do you "NEED" to hit those numbers again?
No matter whether you feel you need to reach that mountain top again or not.. You have to be able to let go of that place you were in and start with a clean slate. If you’re constantly comparing yourself to the person you used to be, the frustration will easily take over your state of mind. This is me right now.. weak AF compared to that Gold medalist, nowhere near where I used to be...
I was an Olympian who trained 6 days a week for 3-4 hours a day, my obligations were school ( kinda lol) and training. Then I finished school and only focused on training which was my peak level of strength. Eventually I got a job and had to find new ways to train and work and my fitness and strength reduced. Once I retired from Olympic sport and found CrossFit I devoted so much time to CrossFit and I was incredibly strong and fast ( close to that Olympian status again) and I trained with a chip on my shoulder the size of the Rockies as I wanted to win every workout and prove I still could be a champion, beat the people who could walk and stand... that was fun but,
Then I was blessed with a kid, and my training changed a bit more, then another kid and a second job, and a third job and a 4th job.... So now I am where I am, I get to workout 4 times a week usually 2 of those days split into 2 sessions a day 20-30 mins each and I know those numbers I had 7 years ago are probably not going to come back. And to be honest I am ok with that, I had that conversation with myself and recognized I am happy where I am and I love working out and still push myself but I don't need massive numbers to feel good, I just need to sweat and beat Brent once and a while :) and every time I have the opportunity, I build a little more. .
So I do what I can and still keep fitness my top priority, its too important in order for me to stay "sane" and healthy and have the energy to do all of the mentioned above but I know I have different goals and its ok to be where and who I am now. I just wanted to share that with you and let you know you are not alone in your struggle and we are here for you to help you reach your goals, accommodate your schedule best we can and we understand. Reminder life isn't instagram and between all those great moments we post there lots of not so great :)
Good news is, We can adapt to injury with the best in the world at CrossFit Indestri, we can scale better then any gym I have encountered, we are here to see you be the person you want to be and every coach on the floor has gone through something similar to you as we are all human and all struggle.I'll leave you with this, Life is good even when the whiteboard has to be cleaned off and start a new board. We clean the scores off of a workout everyday at CrossFit Indestri and everyday is another chance to start again.
