Atlas Stones
Hey guys Stouty here, Thought i'd drop a little university education on you.. lots of good my degree in geography and philosophy does today :)The term atlas stone stems from the Greek GOD Atlas:Atlas, in Greek mythology, son of the Titan Iapetus and the Oceanid Clymene (or Asia) and brother of Prometheus (creator of humankind). In Homer’s Odyssey, Book I, Atlas seems to have been a marine creature who supported the pillars that held heaven and earth apart. These were thought to rest in the sea immediately beyond the most western horizon, but later the name of Atlas was transferred to a range of mountains in northwestern Africa. Atlas was subsequently represented as the king of that district, turned into a rocky mountain by the hero Perseus, who, to punish Atlas for his inhospitality, showed him the Gorgon’s head, the sight of which turned men to stone. According to Hesiod’sTheogony, Atlas was one of the Titans who took part in their war against Zeus, for which as a punishment he was condemned to hold aloft the heavens. In many works of art he was represented as carrying the heavens(and in the art wok where he is depicted in holding the earth... its wrong :))From the strength and difficulty that holding the heavens and all the works of art that depicted atlas holding a giant rock on his shoulder the Atlas Stone was named. in many exercises you will see us lift the stone from the ground to the shoulder. This is a very functional movement and allows us to use muscles we wont engage using a barbell. moving awkward objects is a very common scenario, especially in the summer when we can get outside play with tires, stones, kegs and any other items we can work in.I was lucky enough when i was playing for the olympic team to travel/compete in Greece in 2004 for the Olympic Games and travel for a month after i actually went and saw the Statue in Paphos, Cyprus, depicting Atlas bearing the celestial globe. But i'm sure I've bored you enough.. but today's WOD will do anything but Bore you.. it may take a small piece of you before its all over but it will definitely entertain. So show us your Stones :)
