There aren’t many times that we would ever tell you to push yourself to failure, but this is one of them.
It’s been a couple years since we’ve done CrossFit Total. Typically this is a workout we would hit once, maybe twice a year. This is a day for you to push yourself as far as you can, with proper form and safety of course. But this is a day you go for it.
CrossFit Total is to test just how heavy you can go on 3 different lifts.
Back Squat, Shoulder Press and Deadlift.
When we lift with %, this is where you find your 1RM % for the 3 lifts above.
As long as you’re lifting with good form you will be asked to push yourself to your max, which could very well mean until you just can lift a weight successfully anymore.
If you fail a lift at a weight, you get 3 attempts at that weight.
CrossFit Total is always one of the best days in the facility. We get to see athletes pushing themselves, and often times surprising themselves by lifting more than they thought they might be able too.
Here’s a little tip we learned years ago. Have a starting weight on the bar, successfully lift it, then add more weight, but stop adding up all the weights that you put on the bar. As long as your continuing to lift well, move properly, sometimes knowing the weight on the bar can psych some of us out. So start with knowing the weight on the bar you have successfully lifted, but from there, just keeping adding and lifting.
