Spirit of the Games
Each year at the end of the CrossFit Games, Nicole Carroll the director of training at CrossFit HQ awards one athlete the Spirit of the Games award.
She always as a beautiful speech and this year was no exception. Prior to Noah Ohlsen being awarded the 2022 Spirit of the Games, Nicole told the entire community.
In our gyms we don’t face mirrors, we face each other.
We don’t celebrate aesthetics and swagger, but rather showing up and humbly putting in the work.
We share in the challenge of doing hard things because we know it makes us better humans in every way,
On every level. In the shared striving we create strong local communities and these communities are then heart and soul of the CrossFit moment. They genuinely make the world a better place, always remember that and always fight for that.
In my personal opinion Noah has deserved this award for years. However this year it was well deserved. The iconic moment that we posted about on the blog last night on the capital steps, saw all the athletes who had already finished the event get ushered to the waiting buses. When athlete control asked Noah to leave the area and head to the bus, he crossed his arms and stayed at the finish line, cheering and encouraging Rebecca to finish the event strong.
For years people have questioned if Noah is really that nice, and while I’ve only met him a couple times, we have some mutual friends who are very good friends of Noah’s and 110% confirm that what you see is the real deal. Noah is that nice, that supportive, and truly wants the best for all his competitors.
This is why the Spirit of the Games is awarded. Because while it’s still a competition, the heart and soul of CrossFit lies in the supportive community.
Like Nicole said, the CrossFit community genuinely makes the world a better place, always remember and always fight for that.
