International Women’s Day

Happy International Women’s Day.

CrossFit has created one of the strongest platforms so that girls and women are proud of not simply what their body looks like, but what their body can do. - Elisabeth Akinwale

In honour of this day, we wanted to do a CrossFit Girl workout. However when we thought about it, we felt that workout should also have a little more meaning behind it. One of the special things about CrossFit, the that we honour individuals in the community that have been lost through workouts.

Champion is one of those workouts. Champion was created to honour a CrossFit Athlete by the name of Becky Conzelman. For those of you who have been with us for awhile, you might have done this workout with us before. This will be the 3rd time we have honoured Becky through Champion. We would normally do this workout in April, but we thought it was a fitting workout for International Women’s Day.

Becky passed away on April 6th, 2019 after suffering a brain aneurysm a week prior to her passing. Becky was an OG CrossFitter, a former Games athlete, a wife, mother, the co-founder of Faith RX, a beloved member of the CrossFit Community and she was a good friend to some of our friends in the CrossFit Community. Some of you would have joined us for a virtual version on Champion in April of 2020. During that time we were sharing virtual classes with 2 affiliates in the US, one being CrossFit Watchtower which is owned by Kevin Ogar. Kevin and Becky were good friends, and Kevin asked us if one of our Saturday WODs could be Champion to honour Becky. Becky was also very good friends with Jenny LaBaw, who we do Move Mountains for each year. I decided to make the most of our virtual class and reached out to Jenny, and asked her to join us, to surprise Kevin, and have other athletes doing Champion with us virtually that also has a personal connection to Becky. We ended up with an incredible group of athletes, many Games Athletes and OG coaches who all came together virtually with us to honour Becky, and share stories about her. It was a very cool experience in 2020.

Photo above from the 2020 virtual Champion WOD. Among CF Indestri members you can spot, Talanya Fortunnado, Gretchen Kittelberger, Jenny Labaw and Marcus Brown, Annie Sakamotom, Michele Letendre, Kevin and Shannon Ogar, Pat Barber, Nicole Biscuiti, and Guido Trinidad.

So when we were thinking about a workout for international women’s day, this one seemed very fitting.

The Elisabeth Akinwale quote above is something that we have found to ring incredibly true here at the CrossFit Indestri. We believe that fitness is about celebrating what your body is capable of doing, and that CrossFit for both men and women, but especially for women has been an incredibly strong platform for them to discover and be proud of what their bodies can do, and worry less about what their bodies look like. This is also one of the reason why Steph and I created sheMVMNT. (Stay tuned ladies, we have some things in the works again now that it seems like things are getting back to a pre-COVID normal.)

So this International Women’s Day, as we honour Becky, we ask that you dig deep for this workout. The time on the board doesn’t matter. What matters is the community around you, all coming together to honour this incredible woman!
