Power Monkey

This past January I reached out to Power Monkey Fitness to inquire about the possibility of hosting their weekend Gymnastics and Weightlifting course in our facility. We have hosted many workshops and courses in our space, ( pre-2020 ) and it’s something we have always loved to do.

I was super excited, and a little surprised with how quickly they responded and say yes. It’s not always easy to get seminars/courses/workshops to come to Canada. But that was not the case with Power Monkey Fitness at all.

I was even more pumped when I learned that we would get both Dave Durante and Mike Cerbus as the courses for the course.

The course this past weekend did not disappoint. They were long days, 16 hours of learning over two day, but packed with so much knowledge and information. As coaches and affiliate owners we don’t always get coached ourselves, so that’s always an added bonus for things like this. It’s also really affirming to when drills, techniques, beliefs, etc. are the same or very similar to what we do, but it can also be pretty motivating to look at ways or things we can implement, tweak or add in to our program as well.

Power Monkey Fitness, and Dave and Mike in particular have done an excellent job at creating a gymnastics and weightlifting course and brought it into the CrossFit space. Dave is an Olympic gymnast, and Mike is an Olympic Weightlifter. These two are both truly masters in the respective sports, and they delivered a ton of knowledge over the weekend.

From the coaches side of it, it was also really refreshing to hear them relay and explain the importance of not only not implementing too much all at once, but also the big take away, to maximize movements potential, not to train to stop at the standard, but to train beyond the standard.

We talk about the standard of movement a lot, the standard of movement is and has always been the minimum amount of the range of movement required to achieve the rep. When you train, if you train beyond that, not only are you getting so much more fitness, if you' enjoy the competition side of CrossFit, you have no problem always achieving the standard during competition. And if competition isn’t your thing, training beyond the standard also assists in unlocking other movements. ie) take the pull up, the C2B, and the bar MU. If you’re only ever training to get your chin just over the bar, you’ll never get your chest to the bar. But if you train to get your chin as high as possible, over time, you’ll get your chest to the bar.

So much more, but this is already long. So, all is all, it was a great weekend, and if another opportunity comes up to attend a course/workshop/seminar in our space, we highly, highly recommend taking it.
