In the Open
The first time Steph, Stouty and I (Jen) all did the Open was in 2013. Back then the open had one division, RX. You either could do the movement and the weight or you had to keep trying to attempt it. And while a lot of us struggled with the weights and the movements, we loved every single second of it, because it brought our community together to support, cheer and encourage one another.
Since then the open has created a scaled and an RX division, so you could select which division you were going to do just before each workout.
This year will be the most inclusive open yet, with an RX, Scaled, Foundations and Body Weight division. Also included in the Open for the first time ever is an Adaptive Division!.
I’m going to tell you a little story from my prospective, but this is not about me.
I’ve known Stouty since I was 13 and he was 15. However we also both went to Admiral and his father owned Sporting goods store, 2 buildings over from my father’s Insurance Company, so we probably knew who each other were before we were friends. While we lost touch for many years after high school, it’s a small town and we have many mutual friends, so we would see each other at the occasional get together. We reconnected when we both joined CrossFit Indestri in early 2012.
Stouty has been inspiring our community for years.
I will never forget the day he won his first Gold Medal in the Paralympics. The whole town knew the outcome of the game, because Mrs. Stoutenburg drove up and down the main street of Collingwood with Canada Flags flying proudly and beeping her horn, back and forth for what had to have been for a good hour.
The point of this trip down memory lane is that, we’re lucky to be able to draw off the inspiration and motivation of Stouty. We’re also very proud! Since the 2013 CrossFit Games Open he’s been adapting the workouts for himself to be able to do them. Regardless if he can submit a legit score on the leaderboard or not, he still signs up.
I remember the first time I met Dave Castro at the 2013 Regionals, the first thing I said to him was, “Hey, have you heard of my friend Stouty. You should check him out on the update show. He’s an adaptive athlete who just did the Open.”
Now all these years later, and a ton of hardwork, time, and dedication and the 2021 CrossFit Open will have an adaptive division.
This will be the first CrossFit Open that Stouty will be able to put legit reps on the leaderboard for every workout, and how cool would it be for CrossFit Indestri to have a big presence in the Open for 2021!
Stouty is part of the team that is helping to make the adaptive division happen. This is exciting, it’s a big deal and something that Steph and I are very proud of him for. Sure the open is about the being the first stage of finding the worlds fittest, but it’s also very much about the spirit of the Community.
Let’s all show the world just how proud of our community we are!
Here’s a little video of his first Open workout back in 2013.
