The Thumb Wrap
This would be an ongoing debate between coaches, athletes, etc. on whether you wrap or don’t wrap your thumb around the rig . Most would probably say it’s up to the athlete, but here’s the thing, we’ve seen a ton of people fall off the rig both in our facility, and at competitions because they don’t want to wrap their thumb around the bar.
WRAP IT AROUND THE BAR.
I very rarely write in caps. I’m writing in caps for this, because it’s just not needed to have you fall off the bar because you don’t want to wrap your thumb. (A number of years ago we had someone fall off the bar and break their arm.) Please wrap your thumb.
Years ago we also held a CrossFit Strongman Certification in our facility, and I asked the seminar staff member about the thumb wrap, his response to me was, “you have more strength with your thumb wrapped around the bar.”
If you begin to slip off the bar your thumb is the first thing to slip, so you know it’s time to come down, if you don’t wrap your thumb, that’s where you fall off the rig because you have zero warning. Get in the habit of wrapping your thumb around the bar. I understand it might take you some getting use to, but for your safety and our peace of mind, wrap your thumb around the bar please.
