The UG Series

The Competition Bug tends to hit around this time. Just after the Open, and athletes have had a taste of the rush and the fun that comes alongside competing in CrossFit / Functional Fitness.

We know this because we’ve been around for almost 13 years, and we’ve also been a part of what was the largest functional fitness event in Canada, from 2012 to 2019, the UG Series. For those of you that might not know, CrossFit Indestri was always very close to this competition. UG Series was originally founded, by CrossFit Indestri’s Original founder, Scott Thornton, along with a former member Paul Sproule, and they brought me (Jen) onboard not long after.

Scott, Paul and I ran UG Series together from 2012 to 2019. Over 30 competition around Ontario and one in Montreal as well. Our CFI athletes were also a huge part, from helping judge, move equipment, travel to competitions, help with scoring, set up, tear down, demo videos, testing workouts, and the addition of the WheelWOD games as part of the event, and competing themselves.

Our Beach WOD event grew quickly from 124 athletes in 2012 to over 400 in 2013, over 800 in 2014 and both 2015 & 2016 our Beach WOD event in Wasaga Beach, saw approx. 1200 athletes come to compete over a 3 day weekend. In 2017 we moved the event to Collingwood, as the venue offered us a real opportunity to make athletes swim, and it was also our home base. In 2018 we renamed Beach WOD, the UG Games, and after our 2019 event the company was sold, and is now owned and run by Scott’s son Nash, along with Conor and Rob who both own affiliates in the city.

We had a few of our athletes put in teams and compete last July. If I’m being 100% honest with you, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to attend last summer. This event and this company was a huge part of my life for over 8 years. I dragged my family, (husband and daughters) to events all over Ontario for our events, and it felt odd, hard even, to attend and not be a part. But I ended up putting on my big girl pants and made my way down for the afternoon to support our athletes competing, and to see many of the athletes and even some of the sponsors that I had made connections with over the 8 years of them competing and supporting our events. It ended up being a fun afternoon, and a small part of me also enjoyed not having to run around and work the event.

We know many of you have the competition bug now, so if you’re looking for a competition, we would suggest you consider competing at UG Series this summer. Teams of 4 are required, 2 males and 2 females, there are multiple division to compete in, and it really is a fun day in our own backyard “so to speak”, being at the Terminals. Coach Steph and I will both be there for guidance and support throughout the weekend for anyone who wants to compete but might be a little nervous.

If you want to compete but are unsure, talk to Steph or myself, and if you’re looking for a team, we can look at helping you build some.

In 2019 CrossFit Indestri won the top box prize (one of our C2 Bikes) for the most athletes competing and the most volunteers and judges helping out. While we’re not as connected to the UG Series as we use to be, we’d still love to see a good turn out of CFI athletes this summer.
