Why Fundamentals

It’s the time of year when friends + family start inquiring about that CrossFit thing you do a little bit more.  They’ve notices over the past little while how fit you’re becoming + how much you love it + how much fun you have.So how do they get started they ask?All of our athletes must go through a fundamental program!  3 to 4 one on ones with a coach. This program is designed to give each athlete exposure to the fundamental movements we do in classes.  It’s been developed over the past 10 years to ensure the most success for the athlete going in to classes!  It offers an insight into any injuries or limitations for our coaches, flaws in movement that can be addressed, etc.  This program is absolutely key in maintaining a safe + functional facility!Years ago CrossFit gyms use to offer a free trail class.  Throw a newcomer into one class to see if they liked it.  That quickly stopped because a coach can’t afford the class time to spend teaching a brand new athlete the proper movement form during a class + still be able give the attention they need to the rest of the class.  It’s unfair to the class + to the newcomer.  It can also be very discourage the newcomer who feels like they’re taking too much of the coaches time + can make them feel like they don’t know what they’re doing.Instead, we offer a free one on one trail with a coach.  This gives any newcomer an idea of what we do, + an introduction to the beginning of fundamentals. Some common questions we get;Q - But I’m fit, I train elsewhere 5 to 6 days a week.  Why do I need fundamentals?A - All of our athletes go through fundamentals.  Either here or at another CrossFit location, in which they will still do the free one on one with us first.  You might indeed be extremely fit, but we need to ensure that everyone has exposure to the fundamentals, + most importantly exposure to Olympic lifting before going in to class.Q - Can I just come try a class first?A - No.  You can book a free one on one with a coach to try us out.  But we can’t have someone without exposure to the movements come to class for the first time.  Both for the safety of the athlete movement + our coaches.  As well as fairness to the rest of the class.  CrossFit has this myth surrounding it with regards to safety + injury, we take a great deal of pride in this not being the case.  Part of how we avoid this myth, is by training all of our athletes properly before going in to class.Q - Can my “blank” come try a class with me, I’ll help guide them through it, so the coach doesn’t have to worry?!A - No sorry.  We have phenomenal coaches, it’s their job to coach the class and all the athletes in it.We absolutely love welcoming new faces to CFI + having new people come in to give us a try.  If you might have a family member or friend asking question, please direct them to a free one on one, you can even come with them to that session if they would like you too!
