Did you watch?

Did you happen to watch the coverage from the Rogue Invitational at all last weekend? There are always lots of take aways from watching the top level athletes in any sport.

Firstly, keep in mind that competing is there job. It’s how they earn a paycheque, and while they make it look easy, it’s far from it. There job day in and day out, it to train, fuel, recover, and repeat.

But it’s always interesting and exciting to watch competition. The biggest thing that we always take away from it as coach and affiliate owners, is that proper movement technique is always key. First and foremost you have to dial in the movement before the intensity and before the weight. You might be able to muscle your way through some of the movements, and some of the weights but when fatigue sets in, and it will, without a solid foundation of the movement, your movement breaks down and injuries happen.

If you watched event 7 for the men, you may have heard Adrian Conway compare the Ground to Overhead of Dallin Pepper and Ricky Gerard. This isn’t a knock or a call out, it’s an observation, both are top level athletes in the sport of fitness no question. But you will have heard Adrian talk about how strong Dallin’s Overhead position was, vs. Ricky’s and how to you could see that it how solid Dallin was with the weights overhead, and how Ricky had to bring the weights back down fairly quickly. This is an example of the strength in the end range blog post we shared a couple weeks ago.

(( It’s around the 50 min mark if you want to watch.))

Whether you enjoy competing or not, this is training, and the strength you have in positions transfers over to so much, both inside the facility and outside.

For example, while you're getting ready to decorate your house for Christmas and need to get all the Christmas decor off the top shelf of the closet. You need strength in the overhead position to lift all those boxes down, or to stand on the ladder for hours, arms overhead hanging all your Christmas lights. The strength in the end range that we keep talking about will transfer over to all of that.
