A Picture is worth a thousand words
The idea of the photo above came from Dave at CrossFit London and Alex at Element CrossFit.
The Ontario Government has been stating that fitness facilities are potentially unsafe. The biggest basis for this claim was the unfortunate outbreak that happened at a spin studio in Hamilton.
The media picking up on this has stated that the spin studio in Hamilton was following all the guidelines that the Government put in place and that they have reduced the number of participants in their classes in half, (approx) from 50 to 25. That all the bikes were 6 feet apart. etc.
As a visual, the cones represent people. 24 in this image, the PVC pipe represent a spin bike. In this photo the cones on each side of the facility are actually 9 feet apart (3 feet more than the guideline), the PVC pipes are slightly longer than a spin bike. But here’s a visual….
The white squares as you know are the designated areas that our athletes work out in. Which would representing 8 athletes. (However as you know the one square is usually not used, and instead the 3 on the other side are used.)
Let’s be clear, this visual is not to point fingers at the spin studio, but it is to show that what we’ve been doing since being allowed to reopen is a lot different. Our facility is 7500 square feet, we have 10 athletes in class. While the Government guideline may have had you 6 feet apart, we have you in 9x7 designated areas with 6 feet between those areas.
We’ve increased the number of classes we offer a day to be able to help offset the fact that the number of athletes in each class is lower. The cost of doing business for us has greatly increased, from sanitization products, to the potential of coaches hours, (which is why the majority of the classes are coached by owners right now). We’ve stopped drop in visitors, which results in another lost revenue, and have not yet brought back our varsity teen program, because at the moment, we’re doing our best to weather the storm that is COVID. It’s incredibly frustrating to be doing so many things to ensure the health and safety of our community, because that is what is most important to us! But to have all fitness facilities be lumped in together.
While we’re not affected by the current second round of shutdowns, we have fellow affiliate owners / friends who are. We also know that if numbers don’t start to reduce that they could continue to put other areas into shutdowns, and for whatever reason fitness facilities are at the top of the list.
We want to assure you that we are and will continue to put the health and wellbeing of all of our athletes first. We also know that many of you train with us not only because of the physical benefits of training, but because of the mental benefits as well. On top of doing our best to maintain a sanitized facility for you to train in, we will also do our best to ensure that our doors are able to stay open for you!
