Coachable?

Reposting this, we originally made this post in August 2018

Some Food for thought. Have you ever thought about whether you’re a coachable athlete or not?

The best kinds of athletes to work with, regardless of their skill levels, are athletes who are coachable. Being coachable has very little to do with the athletes physical ability. Some people just learn very quickly, this can be due to gifts for coordination, dexterity, etc. while others may take far longer.  Which is completely fine.  Set the physical gifts aside, it’s a specific mentality that helps some athletes progress faster than others.

Coachable athletes are can be viewed as action figures dolls that have dozens of movable joints that can articulate in all directions.  You have the ability to adjust these athletes easily because they’re willing to move the way you ask them to. It’s not about their mobility; it’s about attitude. While it may at first feel weird or awkward for these athletes to change their technique, they’re open to trying, they understand that it's about the long-term success.

Uncoachable athletes may be more like the action figures that only have moveable joints at the hips and shoulders. These athletes are not really open and they don’t really want to change positions or technique.  They will actively resist attempts to improve their form.  While it may be done unconsciously and it may be more a mental block than physical limitation.  Things that might be commonly heard are:
“But I’ve always done it this way.”
“But this way feels weird”
“But I'm so much slower this way.”
“But I did it like this at another gym.”
“I can’t do that because XYZ.”

You go to a CrossFit affiliate to be coached.  All classes are coach led.  The coach isn't on the floor just to start the music and the clock.  The coach is there to help you move better. If you want to get fitter, move better, etc. then a coach’s instructions are pretty valuable.

Let's be honest for a second, if a coach is correcting your movement, or offering advise on something, why do you think they're doing it?  Because it will help you, and they want to help you.  Also because the coach may be looking past the short term, and looking at the big picture.  Sure you can get away doing something with poor form for a little while, but at some point it will catch up, and that's when injuries happen.  Every single coach in our facility wants to see the best out of each of our athletes.

 Your successes are their successes.
