Can’t

In 2016 we had a women’s retreat weekend at the gym with some of the top level athletes / coaches in CrossFit. Becca Voigt-Miller was one of those coaches. For those who don’t know Becca is the only athlete in CrossFit Games history to qualify between individual women and masters to compete at the CrossFit Games for 16 consecutive years. She is an OG. She is also an affiliate owner in SoCal and an incredible coach.

During that weekend she explained to us that the word can’t does not exist at CrossFit Training Yard, (her affiliate). If you say can’t, ever, you’re doing burpees, and she’s not kidding, she made any of the women who said can’t do burpees.

Instead you have to come up with another way to say ‘can’t’. Maybe it’s at this time I am unable to do that, or I don’t want to try, or it’s too hard for me, or I’m working towards being able to do that. But the word can’t is a no go.

It makes you think about why you’re saying can’t. This is strictly just some food for thought. If you’re thinking about saying can’t, whether it’s in the facility or not, think about why you’re saying it, and maybe reframe it to another way. You’re capable of a lot, so is it really that you can’t?
