JY Pi Tribute WOD

JY refers to Jen Young. Jen was a CrossFitter in Burlington, ON at CrossFit Altitude. A special person, who truly loved the CrossFit community with all her heart. She would geek out on analytic numbers, she loved cats, she was a CrossFit Coach, and wrote WODPress for Sweat RX Magazine. After she was diagnosed with cervical cancer Jen created a foundation called Love the Snatch, which included a Masters Competition that carried on for years after her death.

On Sunday, May 17th, 2015 Jen lost her battle with cervical cancer at the age of 31. For some of us, we were lucky enough to know JY and to even call her our friend. Jen’s passing came the weekend before the 2015 East Regionals. Her passing hit the Canada East CrossFit community hard. She was a bright light, she was a true weekend warrior CrossFitter, and competed in many local competitions, including many of the UG competitions which is how we got to know Jen. A hashtag was created after Jen’s passing #JenisCanadaEast, the first event that year at the 2015 East Regional was Randy, a snatch event, to honour Jen many of the the Canadian women competing, and even some of the American, wore Love the Snatch shirts. It was a pretty powerful moment to watch these ladies walk on the floor on honouring Jen. Whether they knew her personally or not, they were taking time to honour and celebrate her. I was in the stands with my family, and remember watching all these ladies take to the floor in her shirt. JY would have absolutely loved that moment.

Since Jen’s passing we have done her JY Pi workout every year, including two years virtually on zoom. While most of our current members won’t know who Jen was, it’s important to us to continue honouring her, and to introduce new CrossFitters to who she was. Honouring someone through a workout is what CrossFitters do best.

JY was not the strongest, or the fastest in classes, but she was big on movement and the standard of movement, so in her workout today, to honour her, slow down and move well. Hold the standard.

At the 4 hour and 12 min mark you can see the first heat on women take to the floor, and each heat after that.
