Looking to begin CrossFit Collingwood? If you are, then you have found multiple places you can CrossFit in the town of Collingwood and the surrounding area. Here are a few suggestions to help guide you in your decision to join a CrossFit facility.
- Does the owner have past experience in the fitness industry?
When doing your research on CrossFit gyms, do the owners and coaches have any experience or credentials in regards to athletics, coaching, or human physiology? You want someone with the experience and/or education necessary to coach a fitness regimen as complex as CrossFit. Those who have become “passionate”, and decided to open their own gym after a short time spent in a CrossFit facility is not the best option. Understanding human anatomy and applying it to sport is the foundation of a Great CrossFit coaching staff.
- CrossFit seems expensive. Should I go with the cheapest option?
Although it does cost more than your typical “globo-gym”, the results are amplified by the support of the coach and group fitness setting in CrossFit. Nothing motivates an individual more than the support of the many.
As for which gym to choose, the cheapest or the more expensive? As with everything else in this consumer driven society, cheapest is not always the best option. More expensive CrossFit gyms are usually the most established, and have the best reputation in town. CrossFit has exploded onto the fitness scene, and more and more of these gyms are popping up everywhere. There are 3 CrossFit affiliates in Collingwood alone with the odd garage gym here and there (population 17,000). Do not get sucked into the 2 for 1 groupon specials, and half price fundamentals. The quality of the product will not be there. Refer back to the first point.
The class schedule offered can dictate the success of a CrossFit facility. How many classes do they offer throughout the day? Are these classes coached by the same person, or are there multiple coaches? What other options do they have besides the typical CrossFit WOD (Workout Of the Day).
- What are the barriers to joining these facilities?
It happens too often. Someone wants to try CrossFit, with no prior experience with High Intensity Training of any kind, and they are thrown into a regular scheduled class to give it a shot. This can put someone, who is already nervous, into a vulnerable position leading to injury. If there is a facility out there offering a free intro, one on one, this is the best option.
Every CrossFit has a fundamentals program in place. Some offer group classes, and after a couple of weeks will throw you into a class whether you are great with movements or not. Look for a fundamentals program that offers small group or one on one training. CrossFit is complex, and the movements can be difficult to learn. This also allows for coaches to recognize any potential problem areas, range of mobility issues and weaknesses the coaches can work on to better prepare you for a positive experience.
- Do they have a health professional on staff?
The most successful CrossFit gyms have a health professional on staff. Either physiotherapist or chiropractors are utilized well in great CrossFit gyms. Most facilities will have an assessment done by one of their qualified health professionals before allowing someone to begin CrossFit. Take advantage of a place that offers therapy. They will get you on the path to a healthier life, and lower the risk of injury drastically.
After you finish your research on CrossFit in Collingwood, contact each gym and set up an opportunity to give a try. At the end of the day, you will see the quality differences between each gym, and base your decision on what you think is of the highest quality, not the cheapest.
