The first 2013 UG Series summer event is here this weekend in Wasaga Beach, and if its any where near as fun as last years, its going to be a event to remember. Its a wicked way to hang on the beach with good friends while pushing yourself to earn those beers, drinks.
A few have asked how and when to eat. Below is a video from Bill and Marc’s Paleo Adventures (I know its been too long since the last one) at the UG event last summer. We give some good examples of our meals between events. The key thing is to eat a lot of food if you can handle it. If you feel sick from butterflies, try to eat more in the form of liquid calories.
Make sure to eat a big meal the night before and start hydrating 36 hours prior to the event. The sun will be intense, so hydrate well! Try to get a solid breakfast 2-3 hours in before the first event, based on protein and a starchy carb source (plantains or potatoes). Immediately after event one, get some water (with some sea salt) in, and some baby food (sweet potato and berries is the best) in you asap. If you can stomach it, solid protein is ideal, but times like these its okay to have some whey or egg protein in a shake with some simple sugars. Just limit the fat intake for this meal.
Events 2 and 3 will be the same. Just make sure to get at least 8 oz of water in every hour (rough minimum). Even try a coconut water for some electrolytes (there will be free samples on site). After the last event, eat some solid protein, more carbs (even fruit will be fine for this meal) and more water. Go easy on the beers at first – make sure your rehydrate or you may risk getting some sun stroke.
Can’t wait to see everyone there participating or cheering our gym on. Let’s hope Scott and Paul don’t put running or burpies in for me – the barbell club has limited my conditioning ;) See you all in the Beer….. I mean coconut water tent.

I didn’t realize the Beard Strength started that far back? Looks like Marc was getting a head start on everyone else.
scott.
I started rehydrating with coconut water at a mountain bike relay and really like it. I used to use eLoad or Gatorade but I’ve found that my stomach just can’t handle the sugar. Great recommendation for fueling. Real food is where it’s at.
